Impact of Geography on Food Choices

Maharashtra is known for its unique Geographical characteristics that make farming the main source of its food production. Topography ranges from tall mountain ghats to coastal plains with varied features suitable for farming of many different types of crops. Nashik is known as wine capital of Maharashtra as Grapes are mainly produced in that part. The regions in and around Vidarbha and Kolhapur are known for eating more pulses and grains while Konkan is most famous for its Rice and Fruits like Mango, Coconut, Cashews, Jackfruit as the coastal plain soil and Climate is most suitable for this crops. Sorghum is grown in every Part of Maharashtra and hence the Bread(Bhakri in Maharashtra terms)made from Sorghum flour is the staple food of state of Maharashtra. The climate changes as per the regions and hence the curries made are different in spice as well. The people of vidarbha and Kolhapur eat more spicy while the people of konkan eat less spicy . The curries, Sweets made in konkan are fresh coconut based while the curries, sweets in Vidarbha, Kolhapur are mostly from dried coconut.
